This was one ill-fated cruise... The data were collected with the old NB but there were problems with the settings and the pings were averaged, but there was some ambiguity wrapping occuring so various parts of the profiles are corrupted in unknown ways. Sanity checks were applied to the shear and velocity (comparing them to the shipboard data) to see what might be good. The following notes are left over from processing and have the most cogent assessment of the data quality for each cast. The table at the bottom is probably irrelevant. It lists configuration settings. ------------------------> note on processing: uvdiff <-------------------- categories and exceptions (1) these have a midlevel max_good_z because of a lack of scatterers somewhere: i.e. they cannot go to the bottom because of lack of shear info on either up- or down- cast. match the best of dn,mn,up to the shipboard data, cut off partway down (plug with NaNs) (057 058 059 060 064 065 066 067 068 069 070 071 072 075 078 085) (2) these have very shallow min_good_z: mostly because of an early stop on upcast One direction of their casts was corrupted by lack of scatterers close to the surface. Decided what the max_good_depth was and what cast to use by eye from the "choose.ps" files which compare up,dn, and mn casts , (061 062 063 082 131 132 138 139 140 142 143 144 146 149 151 ) (3) these casts have insufficient navigation AND the shipboard data are missing at the beginning or end (so the "up" cast or "dn" cast for shipboard is missing) so there is a mean shipboard value, and there is a mean ladcp, because the up/dn match was good. (except #76 which had a bad ladcp up/dn match, but the missing shipboard cast was the one that should have been used,... so that one uses ship mean and ladcp up) (074 076 077 083 084 ) (4) these are all the ones with (good depth, good navigation) (073 079 081 086 087 088 089 090 091 092 093 094 095 096 097 098 099 100 101 102 103 104 105 106 107 108 109 110 111 112 113 114 115 116 117 118 119 120 121 122 123 124 125 126 127 128 129 130 133 134 135 136 137 141 145 148 152 153 154 155) but the up and down casts of the ladcp aren't always good (there's a big "X" between up and down cast). Choose to use either up,dn, or mean ladcp based on which one minimizes the magnitude of the vector offset between lowered and ship: use that whole cast. (i.e. if 'dn' is best, use only the ladcp downcast). If mag(std(up-dn)) for u and v combined is under 5cm/s, no change is made. uvdiff still records the best offset (for error checking), isn't used. The mean(mag(best_offset)) for the casts which are "good enough as is" is 1.66cm/s, N=18 casts. mag range: (.17 to 3.68cm/s) u range (-2.88 to 1.63)cm/s , v range is (-3.63 to 1.43)cm/s Below is the table (uvdiff.data) of values relevant to fixing. see ladcp/contour/gooduv.m for a description.
